Rough sleepers – support and guidance
Published Friday 31 March 2017It is always unfortunate when someone resorts to sleeping rough on the streets. This may be for many different reasons and not everyone who is on the streets is necessarily homeless.
It is not illegal to sleep rough in public places, such as on pavements, however it is illegal to beg and any beggar can be arrested by police.
The district council does engage with rough sleepers and can offer advice, support and often overnight accommodation whilst we look into their situation.
If people are concerned about a rough sleeper they can contact Streetlink via www.thestreetlink.org.uk
If anyone has concerns about begging, anti-social behaviour or welfare they can call the 101 telephone number.
