Youth competition Speak Out deadline close!
Published Friday 14 March 2014The 'Speak Out' creative competition for young people aged 8 to 18 years is coming to a close on Friday 21st March 2014.
The competition, supported by Harborough District Council, VASL, and the Lottery funded Rural Youth Voice Project asked young people to share their views on the world around them through a creative medium of their choice.
Entries can come from individuals or groups, and can be short films, cartoons, stories, poems, pictures, models, original songs and music or other creative avenues.
The subject can be anything that young people want to have their say on. Entries in the past have included an anti-racism poster, a film about football for girls, and a poem about the effects of violent video games.
Sian Ponting from the Rural Youth Voice Project said: “We want to hear what children and young people have to say, but want to encourage them to say it in whatever way suits them. Meetings and surveys have their place, but this competition provides an opportunity to have fun and be creative.”
An awards ceremony will take place for the finalists at The Symington Building, Market Harborough. There are certificates for all finalists, prizes for winners in a range of categories and one overall Speak Out trophy

More information
The competition is inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which sets out in 42 Articles the fundamental rights of every child and young person under 18 years across the United Nations countries in the world.
Article 12 of these rights says that young people have a right to have their opinions heard and taken seriously and it’s on this right that the competition is based.
The Rural Youth Voice Project has been set up with Lottery funding to make sure that young people in Harborough District can take positive action to improve facilities and service for young people, with their involvement central from the start
