The arena, which opens today, Monday 25 November, replaces the dome which served the community for many years and will continue to provide much-needed weather-proof space to host a wide range of sports and activities.

New lighting, new and improved flooring, additional markings for more sports, and new equipment including netball posts and goals are available to groups who book the facility.

The installation of heating scheduled shortly, will maintain an ambient temperature, suitable for sports participation and the arena is fully accessible.

Hundreds of visitors are set to use the arena each week, with local clubs hosting regular netball and tennis sessions. New markings have further extended the provision of activities on offer with an exciting new futsal league, run by Harborough Town Football Club, now using the arena for matches and training.

Pickleball courts are also marked out in the arena which provides additional capacity for people to play this sport which is quickly growing in popularity, locally and nationally.

Cllr Jo Asher, Harborough District Council portfolio holder for Leisure said: “I’m pleased that the funding we have invested has enabled this new and upgraded sports facility to be built. We continue to engage with local community groups and sports clubs to understand how we can support them best and deliver benefits for the whole community.

“The arena is set to be a super asset and a real boost for local clubs.”

The new facility is set to reduce the environmental impact of the centre whilst also delivering additional upgraded sporting provision for local groups.

Harborough Leisure Centre is run by award-winning operator Everyone Active in partnership with Harborough District Council.

Everyone Active’s contract manager, Matthew Hopkin said: “It is really important we support a variety of sporting activities with this facility, which I’m sure will be well-utilised not just during the winter months, but throughout the year.

“The new facility has already generated a lot of interest from local clubs and we are sure they will enjoy training and hosting tournaments and matches at this state-of-the-art arena”
