The council has awarded £20,000 to support community projects across the district in recognition of the Coronation of King Charles III in May.

The Coronation Community Grant Scheme will support local voluntary and not for profit organisations within, or that benefit, Harborough district with projects that enable better health and wellbeing in the district.

Examples of projects that could be funded include sport equipment, warm spaces, initiatives to maintain or increase greenery in the local area and community gardens.

Communities may also wish to apply for grants to participate in one of the official Coronation events including The Coronation Big Lunch on 7 May, which will encourage communities to come together, celebrate their connections and get to know each other better, or the The Big Help Out on 8 May, which will provide an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of His Majesty’s service and showcase the impact of volunteering within communities.

Cllr Whelband, Harborough District Council’s portfolio holder for Wellbeing, Communities and Housing, said: “I hope that the Coronation Community Grant Scheme will enable our communities across the district to mark and be part of this significant national event. The improved health and wellbeing of residents is a priority in the council’s corporate plan. This grant scheme funding could support a Coronation Big Lunch to help people to meet and socialise with each other or an initiative which will have a legacy of improvements to people’s health.”

Organisations that apply must have a charitable or community goal and be constituted. The scheme has been set up to either contribute towards specific projects or standalone projects and should not be used to cover core running costs or salaries.

Only grants of up to £500 can be awarded. Awards will be made on a first come first served basis and accepted throughout the year until all monies have been spent.

The criteria for the grants and details of how to apply will be available by 25 March at: www.harborough.gov.uk/coronation
