Flooding information and advice
Councils, Emergency Services, water companies and the NHS work together to help people prepare for flooding and to stay safe. In an emergency situation we work together with partner agencies to help co-ordinate a response.
If there is an immediate risk to life, please call the emergency services on 999.
Be prepared
It is important residents and businesses take all possible steps to prepare and protect their properties if flood warnings are issued.
We advise you:
- To sign up for flood alerts
- To check for flood warnings by postcode and assess if you’re at risk
- Protect your home
- To check before you travel – find live travel updates online or by listening and following the local radio
- Stay up to date with weather warnings
- Sandbags are available in emergencies (internal link to the Sandbag page)
- Ensure you have your own household or business flood plan in place
Protect your home
It is your responsibility to protect your home in the first instance. There is lots of useful advice online of how to be prepared and have a robust flood plan in place.
If you think that your home is at risk of flooding and believe you need to protect your home with sandbags, it is a good idea to buy some from DIY outlets ready to use in case of a flood.
Remember though, sandbags are only a short-term fix and may not be appropriate or effective in some flood risk circumstances.
How to report
Leicestershire County Council is the lead flood agency for the county and has a wealth of information about flooding and how to report it on their flooding webpage.
You can also go direct to their flood report form.
For more information on what you can report and who to report them to visit our Partner Contact webpage.
If your home or business has been affected by internal flooding, please report this to Leicestershire County Council, the risk management authority. By informing the correct authority, this helps to target resources to the appropriate areas.
