What is Tell Us Once?
Tell Us Once is a free service which makes it easier to inform central and local government about the death of a person. We understand this can be a difficult time and it is important to us that information is handled sensitively and efficiently. Once we have the required information about the deceased person, we can notify the following government departments:
Central Government
- Passport Office
- HM Revenue and Customs
- Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
- Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)
- Public sector pension
- War pension
Local Government
- Council Tax
- Council Tax Benefits
- Council Housing
- Adult Social Services
- Electoral Services
- Library Services
- Blue Badge Parking Permit
How to use Tell Us Once
When registering the death, a registrar will explain the service and offer to:
- Complete Tell Us Once with the person registering the death, or
- Provide a unique reference number which can be used to Tell Us Once online or by phone
Required information
In order to benefit from the service, the following information about the deceased person is required:
- Date of birth
- Date of death
- National Insurance Number
- Passport number
- Driving licence number
- Vehicle registration number
Tell Us Once must be used within 84 days of receipt of the unique reference number.
